Michigan Football: 2009 Michigan recruiting breakdown:

Recruiting Classes Breakdown:

2004 recruiting class: 5th year Senior (7)
2005 recruiting class: Senior or Red-shirt junior (13)
2006 recruiting class: Junior or Red-shirt sophomore (16)
2007 recruiting class: Sophomore or Red-shirt freshman (19)
2008 recruiting class: Freshman (24)
****Didn’t count walk-ons or guys that get one year scholarships yet

Have 11 people not returning with eligibility left for various reasons from 2008 roster:
2004 class: Adrian Arrington (NFL), Jeremy Ciulla, Brett Gallimore, Alex Mitchell, and Grant DeBenedictis (5)
2005 class: Antonio Bass, Mario Manningham (NFL), and Chris McLaurin (3)
2006 class: Quintin Patilla and Justin Boren (2)
2007 class: Ryan Mallett (1)

Recruiting list for 2009 season:

So if the numbers are correct come this fall we will have (79) players out of the allotted (85) scholarships this fall. Meaning we have (6) available scholarships for walk-ons this fall since we are not to the (85) total. We will lose (11) on scholarship that are either a 5th year senior or a senior.

That means Michigan will have at least (17) commits next year and probably a lot more. I can see several people possible leaving after this spring practices this year and I am sure several will not be back for the 2009 fall season. I can see some of the red-shirt juniors right now not asked to be back or will not return for their 5th year in 2009 season so that would raise the number already to (20) and I am sure by the time fall of 2009 arrives we will see at least three-five more people leaving to equal (23-25) kids. So I am thinking we go after another (25) kids for the 2009 recruiting class if we can find the right kids for the new program.

Coach Rod would have over half the team as his recruits counting the incoming 2008 freshman class and the 2009 recruiting class so he is putting his stamp on this program very quickly for the fall of 2009 football season.

So lets just say we can go after a full 25 recruits for 2009 class:

Offense Commits (6):
QB: Kevin Newsome
QB: Shavodrick Beaver
RB/Slot: Fitzgerald Toussaint
Slot/RB/SE: Teric Jones
WR: Bryce McNeal

Mailbag Question: Regarding Barwis and Ohio State S&C Coach

Hey Coach,

I believe you know about Ohio State S&C program and their coach. How do you compare the differences between Barwis and Ohio State S&C.? In addition, what are some of the same stuff they do? What are the some of the things they do the same and how about the weight rooms? I know you and Eroc were at the coach’s clinic and got to see the Michigan’s weight room how does it compare to Ohio State weight room.
Does Michigan have an advantage now or is Michigan just on the same level as the Ohio State program now?

Thanks....Kevin
-------------------------------------
Thanks for the question. Coach Eric Lichter is head of OSU S&C program and he is outstanding. He used to run his own company Strength and Speed that helped prepare players for NFL combines. There are more similarities than differences in two programs. There are however some differences.

Both Coach Barwis and Lichter are always saying they are about building better football players, not power lifters, or bodybuilders. Both evaluate every player and then design plan for that individual player. Both talk about attitude and mentality of being a lifter. Both are also about developing fast-twitch muscles to help with explosion and speed. Both also are about overall conditioning. Both also, emphasis power cleans and lunges, etc over machines, machines, and single joint exercises. nutrition plays big part in both programs.

Differences, Coach Barwis is more into core muscles than Coach Lichter. Coach Lichter is more about strength and power than Coach Barwis. Coach Barwis has players run a little more than Coach Lichter.

The weight rooms are very similar with same basic equipment. Big difference is Michigan still has more machines leftover from Coach Gittleson then Ohio State has.

Mailbag Question: Regarding Barwis Coaches Clinic and 7 on 7

Hey,

Are you guys going to Coach Barwis S&C clinic or the 7 on 7 tournament? Are you guys allowed to go and what is actually suppose to happen at this compared to what you guys reported back in April with the coaches clinic? Are you going to work out and let Barwis eat you alive? Will you get chocolate milk if you survive?

Thanks guys.

Andy
----------------------------------------------------
Thanks for the question. This being first year for Michigan’s 7 on 7 tournament CoachBt team was already registered for different tournaments. Ohio rules only allow 10 contact days with high school kids and the coaches. So adding another tournament or scrimmage is impossible. We will evaluate all options and consider Michigan next year. Might take drive up and watch some of tournament. They generally allow coaches of other programs not registered to attend.

We are leaning towards attending Coach Barwis S&C clinic. This coach’s clinic and I really doubt or hope that coaches do much more than some demos. We are hoping to learn some new concepts on core and explosion training most. We also want to see if Coach Barwis shows ideas on injury prevention. If we do attend, can guarantee in the 3 1/2 hours will learn much more than in fifty minutes Coach Barwis talked at during the coaches clinic in April.

We would rate the chances 51% leaning towards attending, but of course with the gas prices, the cost of attending the clinic also comes into play as well since we do this on our own cost and time.

Mailbag Question: Regarding Barwis and Supplements

Hey Guys,

Read the stories on your blog and thought they were good about the other 90%. Some of it I had to actually read over a couple of times to get it.

First question is how the new staff gets it where the other staff did not. Along with how does Barwis make things different then what Gitts did? Where does Barwis fit into as far as other S&C coaches?

What do you guys believe in that Barwis doesn't give the kids certain things like Creatine and whey?

Thanks for taking my question

Roger
------------------------------------------------
Thanks for the question Roger. Difference with “Old Regime” and new is just different philosophies that includes S&C. Coach Carr for better or worse wanted his players to be true student-athletes. He believed football should not take 100% of player’s time. He believes that they should be able to enjoy being a student. Coach Rod is the new breed of college coach who wants a 100% football commitment and mind set.

There has been some misinformation about Coach Gittleson (IMO). His workouts were brutal. Kids WHO SPENT THE TIME with him most definitely showed improvement. He was just more into developing raw strength and power. Coach Barwis is more into developing the core and improving explosion. His exact words at the clinic were, yes, we are going to do 20% Olympic Lifts, and we will get bigger and stronger but that will not be primary focus of our program. He talked a lot about ability to transfer energy through the core, and improving balance.

As for the suppplements you mentioned. Those are primarily used to gain weight and strength. If that is not primary function, why use them since most of the Michigan players are trying to lose weight, get more flexible, and gain speed.
