Mailbag question: What is up with Feagin

I haven’t seen or heard much of Justin Feagin. What is the deal with that kid? I understand that he will now play slot receiver as opposed to the quarterback position that he was originally recruited for.

Is he still motivated to be with the team? Is he one of those players perhaps considering transfer or worse get kicked off the team? I like the kid and I would hate for Michigan to lose him.

Thanks for the question.

First, Feagin was recruited with idea he might be moved to slot receiver if quarterback did not work out.

Our information / sources told us Feagin was playing a very solid slot receiver.

When Threet left Feagin was forced to take some snaps at quarterback because of the lack of depth and experience at the quarterback position.

By the time we attended spring practices and scrimmages along with the clinic Feagin was already on the shelf with a medical issue.

Mailbag question: How important is the middle linebacker in the new defensive schemes?

Hey Guys,

First off, I wanted to say you do a great job!

How important is the middle linebacker in the new defensive schemes? I have heard that they are supposed to be the "quarterback" of the defense.

To what extent is this true? If Obi Ezeh can show some improvements from last year will that mean, the whole defense will improve.

In the new scheme, Michigan now uses two inside linebackers similar to 3-4 fronts instead of the one middle linebacker used last few years.

Michigan is also using a zone blitz component in the new package. In zone blitz schemes, it is imperative that the front seven and back four be on same page.

If either the safety or inside linebacker who makes the checks or calls mess up it … it leaves the defense extremely vulnerable.

In our opinion, linebacker play is the heart and soul of great defense play. If Michigan can get better linebacker play, be it from Ezeh, Mouton, or one of the young players it will have a positive effect on the overall defensive play.

Are you guys more worried about this years defense or last years offense and can you explain why?

This year’s defense.

We are of the philosophy of winning with strong defense and special teams are the best way to go.

We prefer the field position advantages that strong defense and special teams provide. We understand that many think this type of football is boring, but it in our opinion it does not have to be.

Teams like USC, Oklahoma, LSU, and Ohio State always build around a strong defense and complement it with sound special teams and competent offense.

Another point a strong defense will always keep a team in the football game especially when your offense is not clicking or going up against another strong defense.
