Mailbag question: Regarding kids playing to high and need to bend knees?

Help me understand something. I always read that a "kid plays too high. He needs to bend his knees." Now, admittedly, I have never played football (though I have pretended to be a high falutin QB with a cute Coed back at MOJO but that's another story for another day) but I don't understand how it could be that hard to just tell a kid to play lower. And at this stage of a kid’s career, why is this still a problem with a tackle? How do you correct it? Hit the kid with a bendable bamboo stick on the back to alert him to get down? A shock collar, a swift kick to the groin from behind? What I ask? WHAT?

Thanks...great blog chock full of good info that you really don't need to depart with. GO BLUE!

Thanks for the question. There are a number of drills designed to help kids play with leverage/ stay low. Best piece of equipment is chutes. These usually tubular lanes that have top bars set at height that causes kids to bend their knees or smack their head on the bars. You can set the dummies on the sled very low so that players need to bend their knees and get low or the sled will recoil and knock them on their @ss. Other drills like duck walks, one on ones with shorter players can also be a big help. Even some S&C stuff can help to teach kids to bend the knees. Squats are great, but box squats, snatch squats and other Olympic lifts force kids to bend the knees.
