Mailbag question:

Gentlemen,

Thank you for taking my questions. Do not you think we are back where we were when Bo took over, looking for another Dennis Franklin, Rick Leach, Steve Smith. I know the reads then were at the line of scrimmage and now they are deeper in the backfield but are not the principles the same. We were looking for QB's who could run, pass, and make good decisions. We found them before, do you think RR will find them again.

Thanks for the question. What Coach Rod’s version of spread is the Houston, or splits back veer out of the gun. The reads and steps are almost identical. The blocking is completely different. The type of quarterback used in both systems is similar in that he must make good decisions and reads. the difference IMO is that QB in Coach Rod’s offense needs to be more of a bigger threat running than quarterback in pure option of Bo needed to be.

In Bo’s offense if quarterback was just average runner you were “OK” because you did not count on him making big plays, just moving the chains. In Coach Rod’s, quarterback needs to be able to really hurt a defense if they do not honor him as threat. If that backside defensive end can crash either the inside zone or belly without threat of big play, much of the running game will not be as effective.
