Mailbag question:

Hey Guys,

Great stuff regarding the Michigan Coaches Clinic. How do you rate the clinic that you guys attended? In addition, how do you think that will help or hurt the Michigan program? What were the highlights and the lowlights of the clinic, if any?

Great job again.

Thanks for the question. Overall, I would grade the clinic a B. (IMO) clinics that stick to single theme, say zone blitz packages give you better information, or say one particular play or scheme. This type of organization makes the clinic more productive.

Also a better venue would of been nice. Acoustics made hearing some of the coaches very difficult. They also made some last minute schedule changes that disappointed us. Was really looking forward to working with Coach Barwis in the weight room like originally planned. Barwis and Coach Shafer were the most energetic speakers and really were exciting to listen to what they had to say. Coach Shafer made his defense easy enough to understand and made it seem like he is not going to complicate the defense. Play fast, play hard, and gang tackle. Everybody to the ball and hit somebody. Barwis had everybody’s attention and you could hear a pin drop in that place when he was speaking.

Running a successful coaches clinic pays huge dividends. It gives the staff a chance to build relationships with high school programs. It also keeps your program in the news and can create a real buzz. The highlights for me were getting to attend the practice and scrimmage, and listening to Coach Shafer and Barwis talk. In addition, the access we were given to the entire staff with the “chalk talk” where you just gathered around the coaches if you wanted to and just talk football.

The only complaint was the venue. I hope that that will be better next year. The track building was almost to big because the sound had an echo to it and some of the speakers you really couldn’t hear.
