Mailbag question:

Where does Fitzgerald Toussaint fit into this offense? How do you think he will be used as a RB or a slot? Also can you compare him to another recruit or a former player?

Thanks for the question. One of the things I like about how Coach Rod and staff are recruiting is they taking athletes capable of playing multiple positions. Michael Shaw (’08 Michigan class) could play running back or slot receiver, same with Teric Jones, and now Fitzgerald Toussaint.

This type of flexibility gives a staff many options. It also lets them get the best talent on the field for a given situation. An athlete like Fitzgerald Toussaint can play slot receiver in some situations, but in passing downs or other specific situations can move to running back and do some things your starting running back may not be able to.

Guys like Shaw and Jones can run those little circle routes out of the backfield or flex out into the slot receiver and play empty without changing personnel and not giving the defense a heads up. When an offense can have this type of flexibility, they can make a Defensive Coordinator life miserable. As for where “Fitz” ultimately ends up, I hope they give him an opportunity at running back. He will add another potential big play threat to go with our other speed backs. What the staff will do is let “Fitz” and the others come in, compete, and let their performance decide where they end up.

Bottom line, bring in as many quality football players as you can and position will take care of itself
