Michigan Coaches Clinic: Breaking down the Tight Ends

Several of us went to the Michigan Coaches clinic and were able to watch the practices and drills. The first day was shorts and helmets, second day was full pads, and third day was scrimmage. Of course, the players need to continue to work hard and keep on developing, but this is what we saw so far this spring.

If season started today, (remember there were some people not practicing):
Butler would start with Webb coming in after him. Massey was in green jersey this spring.

Tight Ends:
This group has great talent and as much as any position on the team. Top two were Butler and Webb while Massey was out wearing a green jersey and only participating on non-contact drills.

Butler:
Strength:
The light may have come on for Butler. He is an outstanding talent who has a super combination of speed and size. Not only has he maintained his size, but looks to be much quicker. He did a very good job of getting separation in drills and scrimmages. Butler is a NFL type player no doubt and has the potential of being the best tight end (pass catching) at Michigan for quite some time. He can be a difference maker on the offense along with making it easier on the other receivers. He looked in much better shape than in past. The key of course will he keep his willingness during the grueling summer workouts. If he does, he could make some big money.

Weakness:
He needs to maintain concentration if he is going to take his game to next level who had several drops throughout the clinic (counted 8) who had way to many on easy passes thrown to him and some were on routes he might have scored a touchdown. He needs to keep working hard and improving. Also needs to show more consistency on catching balls that are throw high in which he creates tip balls which is dangerous.

Webb:
Strength:
He has super potential, just an outstanding athlete. He is a very hard worker who needs to get bigger and stronger. He has really tried to improve his blocking this spring. The competition here is going to be fun to watch and needs to get in with the quarterbacks this summer and working on his pass catching skills.

Weakness:
He has not progressed as much as we would have liked to see this spring. He is slower off the ball than he needs to be. He does not get the separation

Massey:
Has been in a green jersey all spring so hard to tell just running through drills with no contact.
