Michigan Football Clinic: Speakers at the Clinic

Michigan Football Clinic:

Overall, the clinic was excellent for coaches in attendance. The Michigan Coaches were easily accessible and able to answer any question who wanted to ask especially in the chalk talk session after practices and clinic on Thursday and Friday.

Coach Rod spoke and welcomed everybody Thursday and Friday while actually apologizing both days for those that missed the Thursday clinic for the Michigan staff not being more accessible this winter. This openness and willingness to help will pay dividends if it keeps up. He talked about how they like to be more open to any high school coaches that want to ask questions. Talked about how busy they were with getting staff in place when he arrived, getting comfortable with Ann Arbor, moving, getting coaches settled in and recruiting the 2008 class while get going on the 2009 class as well. Also talked about how he wants to get his name out of the newspapers everyday and briefly discussed his trial back in West Virginia along with his expensive lawyer and the Boren situation without naming his name.

Speakers for the Michigan Clinic on Friday:

Coach Shafer:
He was very impressive and talked about base defense and overall philosophy. Explained how Michigan determines number of defenders in the box and how they adjust in base to different formations. He did a real nice job on different ways to stem the front to adjust to different looks. In addition, how to use (Linebackers) to fill any gaps left uncovered by stemming. He was the most intense speaker behind, well guess who?

Coach Rod:
He was probably the most entertaining speaker. He had people “laughing out loud” more than any one else. Stated he would be talking about general philosophy while Coach Magee would explain the offense. Then got into how they attack different looks in this offense.

Coach Magee and Jackson:
Both talked about overall offensive philosophy and areas they like to attack with passing game and overall (Running Back) play and fundamentals of the position.

Coach Frey:
Toss up between him and Coach Shafer for best overall information given. Went over fundamentals of line play and how the nine running plays in the offense. One of better talks I have seen in some time on center play in zone scheme. Michigan actually has (Graduate Assistant) who played center for Coach Frey working with centers that even spoke and was telling the coaches how this position needs to play in this system. Great addition and took questions on how Offensive line makes adjustments different looks and stunts along with demonstrating several ways they want there linemen to move, snapping the ball and get in front of the defensive man. Those guys did a great job.

Coach Barwis:
Old saying, Save the Best for Last, well it sure applies here. He was his usual outstanding self. Intense, passionate, and 100% rush of adrenaline. Spoke mostly about things high schools without huge budget can do. In addition, the importance of proper core training and why it is so important. Coach Barwis alone was worth price of admission.

its about time the michigan weightroom has any resemblence to a modern facility. 90% of the small colleges and 4-A highschools in NC have weigthrooms and programs that were more up to date then michigans... Barwis and his crew will make a huge impact at michigan not becasue they are any different then most modern S&C people, but becasue michigan has been so bogged down the past 10-15 years... finally athletes getting bigger faster stronger and more flexible while at michigan, as opposed to just bigger and stronger, as in the past.
