Bob Bowman is leaving the Michigan men's swimming program. And Olympic star Michael Phelps is going with him.
Bowman announced Thursday he's quitting his job as the U-M coach -- effective July 1 -- and as the high performance coach of Club Wolverine, the Olympic development team with which Phelps has spent the last four years training for this summer's Beijing Olympics.
Beginning this fall, they'll both be back where they started, at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, where Bowman began coaching Phelps as an 11-year-old. His new post will be as the chief executive officer of the Baltimore club, though he'll continue to coach as well.
"It's an opportunity to secure my future, in many ways," said Bowman, who led the Wolverines to the Big Ten championship and a sixth-place finish at the NCAAs. "It's just a long-term move for me. I love Baltimore, and a lot of things came together to make this decision."
Phelps, a native of suburban Baltimore, has been a volunteer assistant coach at Michigan while training and living in Ann Arbor after winning a record-tying eight medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
"I have loved every minute of my time at Michigan -- it has been a fantastic experience," Bowman said. "This is has just been a privilege for me. And Michael feels the same way."
