COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Behind a pair of big innings late in the contest, the No. 6-ranked University of Michigan softball team claimed a decisive 8-0 victory over rival Ohio State on Friday evening (April 18) at Buckeye Field. It was the Wolverines' 21st shutout win of the season and fourth in as many games.

Sophomore pitcher Nikki Nemitz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina HS) earned her 19th decision of the season -- ninth via shutout -- to highlight the Wolverines' defensive effort. While allowing just one Buckeye baserunner into scoring position, Nemitz fanned six batters and gave up just three hits.

Sophomore rightfielder Angela Findlay (Lockport, Ill./East HS) paced Michigan from the other side of the ball, registering a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman Dorian Shaw (Burke, Va./Robinson SS) knocked out her seventh home run of the season -- a three-run shot in the fourth frame -- while junior shortstop Teddi Ewing (Olathe, Kan./East HS) and sophomore catcher Roya St. Clair (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) also tallied extra-base hits.

The Wolverines contained their runs to a pair of innings, but it proved to be all U-M would need as a six-run effort in the fourth -- matching U-M's season-high, single-inning output -- and a two-run second provided the necessary run-rule advantage. Shaw made Buckeye starter Kim Reeder pay for back-to-back leadoff walks by parking a long ball beyond the leftfield fence. Ewing accepted a walk two batters later, and, after advancing to third on a base hit from senior leftfielder Alessandra Giampaolo (Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic HS), executed a double steal to perfection, racing home for her 12th stolen base of the season as Giampaolo pulled into second.
The Findlay sisters recorded back-to-back hits to close out the explosive inning. Angela cranked a double -- her eighth of the season -- down the leftfield line to score Giampaolo and came home herself when her sister, senior second baseman Samantha Findlay (Lockport, Ill./East HS) drove a base-hit single to leftfield.

Despite tallying only one hit in the sixth frame, the Wolverines capitalized on three OSU errors to score a pair of unearned runs and pad its lead to eight. Sophomore centerfielder Molly Bausher (Las Vegas, Nev./Spring Valley HS) reached on a fielding error by the Buckeye first baseman and quickly moved to second on a subsequent wild pitch. After advancing to third on Angela Findlay's single to shortstop, Bausher trotted home on a throwing error from the six-hole. Findlay scored herself when Ohio State's threw away an attempt to prevent sophomore third baseman Maggie Viefhaus' (Eureka, Mo./Eureka HS) steal at second base.
The Buckeyes' Brittany Vanderink claimed her second hit of the evening with one out in the sixth, but after Nemitz forced a fly out to centerfield, Vanderink was caught stealing to end the game.

The Wolverines (40-4, 12-1 Big Ten) will wrap up its two-game series at Ohio State Saturday (April 19) with a 1 p.m. meeting on Buckeye Field.
