To retired Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, the spread attack was about as welcome as a heart attack. But Carr's replacement, Rich Rodriguez, views it as the ideal way to give defensive coordinators a splitting headache.
Getting things humming at full speed might take a while, given the learning curve for the players following the team's substantial personnel losses since last season.
Michigan's leading career rusher Mike Hart is gone, as is leading career passer Chad Henne. The team's two top receivers have departed, along with the NFL draft's No. 1 overall pick, offensive tackle Jake Long.
