Taylor trimmed-down, tip-top

It takes time, but U-M senior starting defensive tackle finally buys into conditioning system.

ANN ARBOR -- Ask about the new-and-improved Terrance Taylor, and his teammates smile.

Taylor, Michigan's senior starting defensive tackle, has lost 23 pounds, shuns fast food and sodas, and he now routinely gets through grueling workouts without any issues.

Rewind six months, however, and the story would have been different.

Vastly different.

Spring practice under new coach Rich Rodriguez brought new challenges, particularly in the realm of weight training and conditioning with ultra-demanding coach Mike Barwis. Taylor was left in the dust while his teammates embraced their new workouts.

U-M's Rodriguez: 'Explosive' McGuffie, Shaw won't be redshirted

ANN ARBOR -- Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez assumed the freshman class would contribute this fall, and he was right.

Tailback Sam McGuffie and receiver Michael Shaw are among the freshmen that Rodriguez said will play.

"(They) are two guys who will not be redshirted," Rodriguez said Tuesday. "The biggest (issue) as freshmen coming in is, can they mentally handle the schemes and the pace? Those two have shown they can so far. They've done enough to convince us they can contribute as freshmen, and I think as much mentally as physically.
