Mailbag Question: Regarding Sheridan

Hey Guys,

I have noticed the last several days that Eroc has knocked on Sheridan with several post. Can you people elaborate on what you saw in the spring for him to knock this kid? I realize he is a walk-on and all, but how can you knock a kid who might be the starter at Michigan.

What does he do well and what does he need to work on?

I haven't seen him in person so I have no idea, but when Eroc says "if Sheridan is the QB we are in trouble" what does that mean? Especially when he also referenced the fact that he struggles with passes longer than 15 yards. How is that possible because even high school kids that don't go anywhere can make the 20 - 30 yard passes. What do you people mean to help me and other understand?

Coach I have not heard you say much about Sheridan and would like your input on it.

Fred

Thanks for the question. There are some definite strength to Sheridan's game. He is a Coach's son and has been raised around the game. It shows in his knowledge and understanding of football. He is also a good athlete who uses his legs to make some plays.

He just did not show a major college arm (IMHO) and it was more than just arm strength. He also had some problems with accuracy that bothered us more than lack of tape measure distance arm strength.

The crossing and other short controlled passes that are hallmark of this offense require the ball not only get to receiver on time, but also in position to gain yards after the catch. We just did not see this out of Sheridan this spring.

We understand that West Virginia's Pat White does not have a great arm either and runs this offense extremely well. In our opinion, difference is White is more elusive and capable of breaking big play with his legs than Sheridan, and he also has a very accurate arm completing almost two thirds of his passes.

One thing you didn't specify is if you are solely relying on what you saw during Spring practice. Or, is your judgment based on what you have seen in limited fashion during Fall practice? I ask because if your comments about Nick are based on Spring practice without seeing how he's performing in Fall practice, then obviously you aren't working on current information because it appears that Nick, according to all reports, is doing a pretty good job in Spring ball. The real story is why Threet isn't progressing.

The true test is to see how these guys perform when it really matters and that's during a real live game.
