Family ties led Campbell to commit too soon

When Detroit Cass Tech star William Campbell decided to rescind his commitment from the University of Michigan last week, a natural question arose: Why after all of this time had he become uncertain about where to spend his college career? The answer can be found in the old cliche: "What momma says goes."

It doesn't take a long conversation with Ola Campbell to understand where her son's tough, no-nonsense approach comes from. Her bluntness when speaking about her offspring may come off as abrasive to many, but it shouldn't. It's merely a reflection of how deep a mother's love is. It's the same love that early on requires holding a child close, but later requires letting them go. Ola Campbell knows that the time for the latter is rapidly approaching. That's why she's determined to not inadvertently tether him while he's making the biggest decision of his life to this point.

"We were talking about (whether or not Will should de-commit)," she said, "and the main reason he gave me all this time for why he wanted to go to Michigan was because he wanted to be near me -- 'I've got to stay near you, Ma. I've got to take care of you.'"

"I said, 'I done took care of myself for all these 40-some-odd years. You go where you are going to be happy and educated. You choose the opportunity.'
