SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Michigan Wolverines lost the football, the game, and their cool.
Because of the waking echoes and shaking thunder at Notre Dame Stadium, a driving second-half rain, or other reasons unbeknownst to man, UM simply couldn’t stop themselves from giving the ball back to the Irish. Hence, Notre Dame drilled the Wolverines 35-17.
UM lost four of its seven fumbles — including the first two times it had the ball — and fell behind 21-0. Its fate was essentially sealed when Irish linebacker Brian Smith picked up a Steven Threet fumble on the first play of the fourth quarter and rumbled 35 yards for a touchdown to complete the scoring.
