Bigelow: Jittery road ahead for Michigan football program

At their best, sports give us something to cheer about. The make us believe in the improbable. They distract us from the every day problems of the world.
For University of Michigan football fans, Saturday's game merely extended them.
Watching the Wolverines lose to the University of Toledo was a lot like watching the Dow Jones Industrial Average careen through a topsy-turvy week. It was tough. It was ugly. And no one is quite sure if rock bottom has been reached yet.
The Wolverines lost 13-10 to a Toledo team that was shut out last weekend by Ball State and started the season 1-4. The loss was Michigan's fourth of the season, but felt like it meant a lot more than another run-of-the-mill defeat.
It was the loss of a little history. Michigan entered the game never having lost to a Mid-American Conference team in 24 games.
