Mailbag Question: Regarding Tackling

Great blog! Got a question...

It seems like tackling gets worse and worse every year. Is it that coaches are reluctant to hit during the week with only 85 scholarship players? Is having a healthier team that important if the defenders cannot wrap up and tackle a ball carrier?

Thanks for the question. Number of issues. First is offensive football has put defense at disadvantage. More defenders are put in one on one situation. In addition, teams are putting more emphasis on defensive football and this leads to the better athletes playing on defensive side.

There have also been some rule changes over the years that have made tackling and physical play in general tamer. This year Michigan’s team hit more than any Michigan team in recent memory and still has tackling problems.

How does "better athletes playing on the defensive side" explain poor tackling? Don't follow your reasoning.
