Mailbag Question: What does Michigan need to do to beat Northwestern?

Going into the Northwestern game what does Michigan need to work on to beat them this week and also what have they done well so far this year (if anything) to keep building on.

Got another question why does it seem the offense will not change with the players they have, but the defense is asked to change even though the personnel they have might be better for a certain defense such as the 4-3 or 4-2. I don’t really get why they would try the 3-3 with the is defense, but the offense will not budge.

Thanks Hank

Thanks for the question. Second question first, when the head coach is working with the offense what you do or happens gets questioned a lot less.

Coach Rod for better or worse truly believes in the Quarterback read option and is willing to take lumps short term for what he believes will be long-term gain.

Biggest thing Michigan needs to do is continue to show improvement. Some of the key areas we are watching are on offense, offensive line play, split end blocking, running backs running with patience, and quarterback making proper reads.

Also watching to see is timing improving, and does offense get into rhythm as it did against Minnesota. One big area that needs addressed is red zone efficiency. Michigan had to settle for field goals far too many times in Minnesota game. Put the ball in the end zone when you have the chance and bury your opponents.
On defense it is the fundamentals we want to see continue to improve. First thing is being sharp crisp tackling. Also proper angles, positional play, and being aggressive attack mode.

For the team as a whole, does it play with same purpose, fire, and passion shown against Minnesota, or does it revert to Purdue game.
