Mailbag Question: What is the difference in the defense?

How is the 4-2-5 defense different than the 3-3-5 (WV coaches) or the 3-4 "okie" that Coach Shafer has run this year and what I mean is with the personnel along with what type of players are different for those schemes?

Thanks for the question. Biggest difference is in 4-2 you use four down linemen instead of three in other two defenses.

This means you have two Defensive Tackles in the game to collapse the pocket. Four fronts also allow you to use one Defensive Tackle as spy against draws and screens and blitz one of your Middle Linebackers. Four fronts also allow you use more front four stunts, loops, twists, etc.

The way Michigan used 4-2 on Saturday the Linebackers played very similar to how they are used in 3-4. Many times Michigan had M. Williams and B. Harrison lined up in the box so defense played very similar Virginia Tech 8 man front / 4-4.

Personnel in secondary are similar with all three defenses. Personnel for all three are similar when you are using them as part of nickel package. You need Defensive Ends who can get up field and pressure Quarterback, Defensive Tackles are different as highlighted above, 0 tech / Nose Tackle needs to able to control both as in 3-3 and Okie defense, two Defensive Tackles in 4-2 will have single gap responsibility. You need Outside Linebackers who can blitz off edge, reroute and get under coverage, and play screens and such. Defensive Backs have to able to cover and get off blocks, etc.
