Michgan Football Tidbits: Defense

Michigan Football Tidbits: Defense

Let's first point out that nobody, at this point, really knows exactly which direction Coach Robinson is going to take the defense. He is currently evaluating film (remember Michigan films both games and most of scrimmages and practices.)

After watching film, he will probably put in place a very basic scheme with a great deal of flexibility. The main emphasis will be on getting the best players on the field.

Also, let's state that we are hopeful that much more emphasis will be placed on the defense this spring, since, compared to last year, not as much focus is needed on implementing the new offense, a lot of the groundwork for that being established last year.

Of course, there will be considerable time spent developing freshmen quarterback Tate Forcier, but a year ago -- at least in practices we witnessed -- there was very little attention given to the defense except for when it pertained to defending the new offensive schemes.

We're very hopeful that Coach Robinson , as he recently expressed, will implement his initial inclinition of "showcasing" our best players. Case in point, Warren: a year ago in spring, Warren was told repeatedly that he would be going one-on-one with the opposition's best wide receiver, a challenge he was looking forward too. But circumstances led to Michigan to play much more zone leading to an increasingly tense relationship between Warren and Coach Shafer as the year progressed.

For Michigan to be successful in 2009, our best players have to play great. Their noteworthy performance must be the coattails upon which the rest of the defensive roster rides to success. There seems to be a disturbing trend where In big games Michigan's best players demonstrate sub-par play, while the opposition's best players rise to the challenge.
