Mailbag question: Some questions on certain players.

Hello,

Great site. Your site was referenced by another site and now I am hooked on your informative updates. I did have some questions on certain players.

Daryl Stonum: When I see him play I get the impression he is a little soft and doesn't like to go over the middle. Any insights you have would be greatly appreciated on this perception.

Kenny Demens: Seems like he has enough speed. Maybe too much straight-line speed. What is your opinion?

Grady. Is he a fullback in this system and can he hold onto the football. Does he beat out Moundros?

Lastly, in your opinion, which is the biggest weak point on this team excluding the kickers. If DL or LB position, is it because of depth or starters and what makes the weakness? Is it youth or depth or talent.

Please post on your site. I really appreciate all of your work and effort!

Cordially,

John W.

Thanks for the question and comments.

When we saw Stonum in spring of 2008 we came away thinking star of the future. This spring was 180 degree difference. In our opinion Stonum is example of kid with kid skills but would be better fit in pro style offense. He is very good running vertical routs and getting deep. At this time he is not as good at turning short routes and such into big plays. Still think Stonum has enough skill to be plus player for Michigan.

We like Demens he has good movement skills and is excellent striker. He was in tough situation this spring. Learning second defense in two seasons and only three scholarship players practicing and six total linebackers for two positions. Demens also has a passion for the game and a lot of pride. Bottom line is he is going to have to play quite a bit this fall and look for him to possible help out on special teams as well.

We have so much respect for Grady. This a kid who has worked his ass off and done whatever is asked of him. Fumbling will always be a question and will not be answered until the season. Grady did nice job as fullback this spring, he is not the blocker Moundros is, but is more of a threat as ball carrier. Would expect Moundros to be primary fullback in I-formation and Grady used more in max backs.

Would be coin flip between safety and linebacker. Depth is issue #1 with both positions. We talked about linebacker numbers already, but safety had only four scholarship players including B. Smith who is now playing linebacker.

Linebacker has a bit more experience, but is counting on two redshirt freshmen in top four. Safeties have only M. Williams with actual game experience at safety.

At linebacker we have Ezeh in our opinion is still better fit at defensive end or outside linebacker, and Mouton a converted safety who is now learning his third position inside linebacker. At safety you have M. Williams a converted cornerback and Vlad a true freshmen. Real tough call!
