Michigan Football Tidbits: More Stuff

Offensive Line:
Despite great showing by offensive line in spring there are still some concern with the depth on the interior offensive line. In fact depth across the board is still concerning to coaches.

Barnum of course is key player (who can play anywhere). On his surgery it was suppose to be minor deal and he is expected to be full force in August.

Down the road Khoury is becoming a very important player when it comes to depth. His versatility will allow Pace for example to come to Michigan and work out at offensive center (Khoury practiced both offensive center and offensive guard in the spring. If season started today Barnum, Khoury, and Omameh would be our three offensive linemen that would supply depth.

Of the incoming freshman Q. Washington is seen as the one who could be the most ready to move into the two deep.

Slot Receivers:
The bubble screen is really the only reason Michigan recruits shorter slots. Coach Rod seems to be changing the offense somewhat now that he has a quarterback that can throw the ball.

This is important especially if they find a guy (like Stokes) who can be successful in those bubble screens. We think they prefer taller players.

In the spring there were numerous mean numerous passes) that were intercepted, tipped, overthrown because quarterback overthrew the shorter slots downfield. That is one of big reason Roundtree got more and more playing time with first group.

Not sure, but sure down the road that some defections will come from that group. Also think about this if D. Robinson does not make it at quarterback fulltime do they play him at slot receiver or cornerback. If slot receiver he may have the most talent of any we have now. Also would be an easier transition to slot receiver than defense because of knowing the plays as being the quarterback.

One thing regarding the slot receivers position and with the addition of improved tight end play we are only playing one slot receiver now. When we go to a three wide receiver set we are usually using a fullback. So what do you do with about eight kids who can play slot receiver with only one spot that plays. Odom is clear number one right now and then you flip a coin, but Roundtree showed flashes and they liked using taller slots.

Remember we rarely use two slots on the field at one time so that means only one position. Right now we have a lot of slot receivers jammed into three classes.

2008 class: Odoms, Roundtree, T. Robinson and J. Feagin.

2009 class: J. Stokes, Gallon, T. Jones, and D. Robinson could see time there as well.

2010 class: D. Dileo, and T. Drake.

Now throw in Kelvin Grady as well.

"The bubble screen is really the only reason Michigan recruits shorter slots."

That seems like a patently false statement, especially given the propensity of the expressed ideal flexibility of players to line up at slot and running back. Additionally, the historic recruitment and usage of shorter players and the sheer idiocy a coaching staff would possess to have potentially 11 players on the roster to run one play (as you suggest above - the bubble screen) is assinine.

Do you guys think it is enitrly possible for them to install new packages with multiple slots?

It is impossible to have formations with more than 3 slots. By rule teams must have 7 men on LOS. UM already has empty formations which use 3 slots as part of their offense already.
