Mailbag question: Defensive Talent?

ErocWolverine / CoachBt:

I'm concern that Michigan is not loading up on "Elite Defensive Talent." If you look at USC and Florida over the past three recruiting classes, they have recruited "Elite Defensive Players" (difference makers on defense). In your opinion, do you believe that Michigan can build a championship defense just like USC and Florida has with the good defensive talent (not "Elite Talent") that they are recruiting.

Thanks so much for the blog, I really respect your opinion because it's honest.

Thanks for the question and comments.

We are equally concerned with lack of elite level defensive talent.

To compound our concerns, Michigan is not even getting visits from many of the difference maker defensive athletes. It is possible to build a very good defense with a lot of real good players.

But in our opinion, it takes the elite level, top twenty in NFL draft type players to build a truly great defense. Building around a Charles Woodson type player is the best way. Those type of great athletes / players elevate all those around them.

We keep hearing about kids wanting to visit or will visit that could be those type of players, but have not showed up to Ann Arbor yet for a visit while they go elsewhere. Some have already committed elsewhere as well.

The one problem we have as well now, is that they cannot miss on the commits they get on the defensive side of the ball with so many holes to fill and not many spots left. They need several defensive backs yet, a linebacker or two, defensive tackle, and a pass rusher would be nice. In our opinion, we need players / athletes -- not just bodies as well.

No dufus.....elite defensive players make National Championship contenders...go back to Mgoblog where clowns hang out

Who cares if the other team scores. All we have to do is score more than them. Haven't you heard the ol' saying...Offense wins championships!

Old Coaching Axiom, If we scare we might win, if our opponents don't scare we can't lose.

Building a great defense around a difference maker, elite level player is always easier. UM 97 having a difference maker in Charles Woodson made all the difference. This type of elite level talent makes every one around them better.

this just in, having a 5-star QB is better than having a walk-on, too.

I learned this from mgoblog, where doofus' hang out.

Not always, BGreise was walk on who led UM to a NC.

First off, I have not made a comment on this article ... and if you do not like what coachbt, maizeman or myself say then do not visit.

I cannot speak for maizeman or coachbt, but I do not really care ... We are averaging more clicks a day (roughly 3,000 a day) then we ever thought we would get when this was all started.

It is funny that people like you keep complaining about our information, our writing, and about what we bring to this blog, but we keep seeing you around here.

So thanks for keep coming back daily even though you do not like the content.

That shows us more than anything else!

I am always amused when people attack me on my being gramtically challenged as way of trying to question my football information.
