Mailbag question: Michigan offensive play calls-

GBMW,

Thanks for answering my concern about Mike William’s lack of courage. I disagree with you but respect your opinion. Whenever you get a chance to re-watch the Penn State and Illinois games please key on Williams. Too many times he will avoid putting his head down and tackling below the waist, he either sticks an arm out, or tries to hit them high. Most of these weak efforts occurred near the line of scrimmage.

I was fortunate to have tickets to yesterday's Florida/FSU game in Gainesville. The one thing that really stood out was the Florida teams ability to make tackles that stick. Joe Haden, a number of times was out in space alone and cut down much larger players with good below the waist tackles. Never did he try to hit someone high or knock them off balance.

On offense the shovel pass to the TE, Hernandez, off the option was absolutely devastating. Why have we not seen some variation of this very effective play from Coach Rod? I have to admit the game experience in The Swamp was more electric than I have ever seen at The Big House.

Keep up the good work; you guys are always my first read when it comes to U of M football blogs.

Thanks for the question and comments.

We have no problem with you or others not agreeing with us and that is what makes this blog fun, because it is a place for debate along with discussion on football, basketball, hockey or whatever Michigan sport people want to talk about.

In regards to your question about the offense, the old Utah shovel pass is in the Michigan Coach Rod playbook.

It is called dart and was listed / mentioned by both Coaches Frey and Magee at the spring clinics.

It was under the category of use only if needed.

In regards to "the swamp,” we agree, it seems like a great atmosphere to watch a football game. Again, though, we believe that Michigan Stadium can become a great atmosphere to watch college football once again. We have seen at certain games that same electric atmosphere you talked about, but the thing is the team has to be playing well (which has not happened in awhile) and also needs to be playing well against a great opponent. We have seen this vs. Ohio State, when both program were good, or when both sides believe they have a chance to win the game. We have seen this during Michigan State, against Notre Dame, and several other major programs that have came to Michigan Stadium in the past (such as Washington).
