Mailbag Question:

Hey guys,

I noticed you guys haven't addressed the Charlie and his comments about Michigan. What are your guys thoughts about it along with are the fans making a bigger deal about this or not? How can a coach say what he did after all the excuses he has used the last couple of years and all the loses ND has had the last several years.

Harold

Thanks for the question Harold. Coaches use all kinds of things to motivate or try to get advantage over opponents. They will also use press to take pressure off their team. Coach Bo was master at this. He would go off on officials so that headlines read about Bo, not how poorly his team played. He was willing to take the heat to take the pressure and heat off his team and players.

I remember once when Michigan barely beat Wisconsin and Quarterback Steve Smith played terrible. Well Bo went before the press and said blame me, I ran the kid too much in that very hot day. So if you people can just blame me for being stupid.

The headlines the next read Bo takes blame, admits stupidity, but nowhere did you read a word about how poorly Quarterback played. Brilliant move (IMHO).

I think Weis is doing similar thing. Taking all the pressure off his team and putting it on him. He is also probably using this to try to motivate his guys, he can tell them guys, your coach opened his big mouth and now I need you guys to make this right for me.

Regardless, there is excessively too much is made by fans of this type of thing. Once the game begins, all the verbal stuff means nothing.

The thing is usually the team that executes its gameplan best, and makes fewest mistakes
usually wins.

Weis stole a Bo saying, as it was Bo who quite often said "To Hell with Notre Dane" no doubt he was playing off of that, i guess he isn't smart enough to con his own original phrase..
I have no idea if ND will be any good or not, but i do know, this is a game we have to win, and despite the national barrage against ND the last few years, when playing at ND funny things can happen, so i will not take them lightly, and I'm sure the team won't.
So I'm glad Weis opened his mouth for something other then food....
