Mailbag Question: Regarding David Cone

Dear Eroc and Coach,

Where does David Cone fit in. I watch Michigan football from far away and have always spotted David Cone on the sidelines sometimes with headsets on. With the Coaches up in the booth now, how will the signal calling be handled on both sides of the ball?

Thanks
Best regards,
John

Thanks for the question. David Cone is type of football player every program needs. He goes to work everyday, does whatever is asked of him, and competes hard.

The problem David Cone is having and (In Our Opinion) will continue to have is just does not fit well with Coach Rod’s offense.

He still can contribute much to the team and program. He can act as demo player for teams with a drop back quarterback. He can help on sidelines with communications and charting opponent’s defense. He can help in film room and provide quality depth. Finally, we can get his degree and be super ambassador for Michigan football.

Regarding how the signals will be handled. Well from what we have been told both offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator will be upstairs. So both will be able to see the field and decide how they want to attack. Coach Shafer has said he does not understand how a defensive coordinator can call a game from the sidelines because you cannot see what the offense is doing all the time from the sidelines.

On the offense, Coach Magee usually calls the play and sends it down to the other quarterbacks along with Coach Rod. The final say for every play is Coach Rod’s and he will either okay the play or change it with the quarterbacks signaling the play on the field. Now when they line up a lot of times the starting quarterback will look over to the sidelines and see if the coaches want to check to another play after seeing what defense might be lined up against them.

As for the defense Coach Shafer will call the plays and this is ASSuming a little bit, but we would not be surprised to see Coach Hopson calling in the plays and helping Coach Shafer with the calls especially since he was a former defensive coordinator and would be able to give Coach Shafer the “feel” of the game from the field.

Shafer says in the countdown to kickoff interview with Karsch that he tried calling games from the booth, but hated it.
