U-M defense gets the idea late

Wolverines say jitters, lack of communication might have caused their sluggish start vs. Utah.

ANN ARBOR -- At least one former Michigan player felt the need to phone a current player to offer some words of wisdom and encouragement.

Cornerback Charles Woodson, the Heisman Trophy winner in 1997, gave current starting cornerback Donovan Warren a call after the Wolverines' 25-23 season-opening loss to Utah Saturday at Michigan Stadium.

"He said everything was going to be all right," Warren said.

Actually, if there was anything "right" during the Michigan loss, it was the second-half play of the defense, which entered the season as the acknowledged strength of the team.
