Detroit News:

Locals: U-M police check on alleged assault

Victim is identified as a hockey player for the Wolverines, but no arrests have been made.

Detroit News staff reports

University of Michigan police say they still are investigating an alleged assault involving U-M hockey player Steve Kampfer, but no arrests have been made.

"We are investigating an alleged aggravated assault at 2:25 a.m. Sunday," department spokesperson Diane Brown told The News on Wednesday. "The victim is a 20-year-old male from Jackson, and we have identified a suspect as a student from Ohio.

"Our preliminary investigation shows that there was a verbal exchange and then the suspect apparently picked up the victim and slammed him into the ground. The victim was sent to the University of Michigan Emergency Room and was released Monday afternoon."

Because the investigation is ongoing police would not release the names of the victim or suspect.

The Michigan Daily, citing witness accounts, identified the suspect as Mike Milano, a redshirt junior on U-M's football team.
