Mailbag Question: Regarding the BCS Bowl Games

I have a non-Michigan question since Michigan is not in any bowl game this year. What do you guys think of the BCS and the five bowl games in the BCS.

Did they get them right? It seems like Ohio State got the bid because of their fans travel well and probably a better TV game then if Boise State would have gotten the bid.

I am not knocking the BCS because it is closer to a real championship then what we had, but seems like things could be different.

Thanks,

Jim

Thanks for the question. There is one general rule with bowl games: follow the money. This dirty little secret is much of what BCS, and college sports in general, have become -- it is all about money.

Is it fair to the Boise State's of the world? On one side, we say no, undefeated teams have earned certain privileges. On other hand, schedule tougher out-of-conference games if you want noticed and to generate that buzz.

You cannot blame these bowl game promoters. They have huge payrolls and expenses. If the teams do not fill the seats and buy the gear, bowls lose money and make it very hard to get or keep sponsors.

The television audience will probably be higher as well with a match up of Texas vs. Ohio State than they would with Texas vs. Boise State.

In this day and age, this is just the nature of the college sports beast.
