Mailbag question: Bowl practices

Mailbag question: Bowl practices

GBMW,

Thanks for all your insight, guys.

You have often mentioned the importance of bowl practices in developing the young players. Well, now it appears we are about to miss a second straight year of bowl practices. My question is can a player ever really recover from missing all those practices when you compare him to a similar player at OSU or PSU? And if so, how far back will it set them?

I cannot help but think that a kid like OSU's Etienne Sabino is going to be more prepared to hit the field for playing time next year than a kid who came into UM at the same time, J.B. Fitzgerald, just because Sabino has had 30 more prime out-of-season practices.

And with next year's schedule looking awfully tough and our defense potentially being worse with no Graham and Brown, a bowl isn't a given next year either. It is hard to imagine how much the lack of opportunity might be setting back Fitzgerald, BRob and especially our young OL like Barnum, Mealer and Khoury, when compared with the seven Big 10 schools that will each have been to bowls in 2008 and 2009.

Your thoughts?
JP

Thanks for the question and comments.

These fifteen bowl preparation practices are crucial to player development.

Once the season begins most young players stop learning the Michigan system and become strictly demo players.

Their job is to simulate the offense or defense of Michigan’s opponents.

These guys get very little, if any, time learning and running their own team’s schemes.

The fifteen practices give the youngsters needed reps, and lets the staff start to look at replacements for this year’s graduating seniors.

Do not overlook the recruiting benefits of those fifteen practices. Most high school seasons are over and this gives players a chance to visit and see bowl practices first hand.
