Mailbag question: Jon Hankins
GBMW,
Recruiting question about Jon Hankins
In regards to Hankins getting an offer now, what does that actually mean? Does this mean that Hankins has improved since the summer? Is he still overweight or has he improved enough to show that he will work hard in the off-season?
Does this offer mean that the Michigan coaches realized they need to get bigger now especially going through the past two seasons in the Big Ten conference?
Does this mean that Michigan lost out on several other recruits so now the coaches are going back to recruits that they think can be of some help and getting a local kid would help with "good-will" towards the Detroit and in-state recruiting?

Thanks for the question.
We know that Michigan did re-evaluate Hankins, scouting his games this fall. We see very little difference between his junior and senior film. Essentially, Jon is still the same type of wide/space- eating body, with limited speed and raw fundamentals.
We hope that his offer and the recruitment of "Big Tex" means the Michigan staff has decided it is important to get bigger up front, but it is a bit early to make that judgment.
We are still hearing that " Big Tex " will be tough to get away from Arkansas and that Terry Talbott is still thinking about taking some visits.
So it is very likely, as with most things, this offer is a combination of all the things you listed such as losing out on bigger fish (Sharif Floyd to Ohio State), taking a chance on a bigger recruit who needs to get into a bit better shape, and taking a chance on a kid that might work out.
