Mailbag question: Oregon and Michigan

Great job with the Blog!

How close are the spread offenses that Oregon and Michigan use? Do you think the Rose Bowl could be a good preview of what future Michigan/Ohio State games could look like? It will be interesting to see how OSU defends a well-executed spread.

Thanks for the question.

The two offenses do have some similarities, both use the inside zone and the outside zone or stretch play.

Both also use reverses and options to stretch a defense horizontally.

The difference in the running game is that Oregon also uses the mid-line option. This series is where an offense does not block the 3 tech defensive tackle and the quarterback reads him (3-tech defensive tackle).

If he closes, the quarterback keeps and attacks off the defensive tackle’s butt, if the defensive tackle stays wide, the quarterback hands to the running back.

We will see how good both those teams will be, but in a bowl game anything can happen, especially for Big Ten teams at the Rose Bowl.
