Mailbag question: Taking players far too early

GBMW,

Hey guys I was just thinking about recruiting,

I hate to compare the old staff to the new staff, but does it seem like the new staff is accepting verbals prematurely? Do not get me wrong I am not trying to bash the new staff but I feel like if they would have waited and not accepted the commitments of some of the offensive players, we could have used the scholarships on some very important defensive players we need, what's your opinion?

Thanks for the question.

Questioning the recruiting philosophy of any staff is 100% legit in our opinion.

The new staff has the philosophy of id’ing certain personnel early before others get involved.

Like all strategies this has its pluses and negatives.

This is something we were concerned about very early on, that UM might just run out of scholarships for high-level players at certain key positions. If there are indeed more highly sought after players that want to come to UM and UM does not have scholarships available that would be a shame. But UM could always do the "Barnes" deal, where the coaches do not call a kid for months and hope he gets the message and looks elsewhere, but that can also hurt your recruiting efforts with the high school coaches. This is not an imaginary scenario, it has happened, and happened with at least two Ohio recruits early this year, who likely would have (but had not yet) committed to UM. Whether the players were worthy of a scholarship is one question, how the phone stopped ringing is the point really being discussed

But in our opinion how Coach Rod recruits this year, last year, the year before, or in the future, it would not affect the make-up, or the ratio, of offensive to defensive players in the class. Coach Rod is always going to be winning with offense, thereby creating a natural inclination to take offensive guys first and defensive guys second.

It is what it is ...

Do you think this may have something to do with how recruiting has changed? I've heard mutliple coaches state how it has been sped up and how you have to get on these kids earlier. Not sure, it's just a coach Rod thing, but something that most coaches do and have become succesfull doing...ie Florida

Yea it could be, but a lot of these recruits Michigan could have gotten later on ... IMO ... If you noticed lately Michigan has many recruits looking at Michigan right now, but only have a few spots left. That is what might them in the butt unless they pull the "Barnes" card again and stop calling certain kids for months and basically tell the kid without telling him to look elsewhere.

It is possible to tell a kid you're interested in him without offering him, right? I think if a scholarship from Michigan materialized in a certain player's mailbox, I think it would still make them think twice about the Army's or the Bowling Green's or the Colorado State's that are recruiting them.
