Mailbag question: Training techniques

Everyone considers Barwis to be one of the best strength and fitness coordinators in the country, but it seems to me that the last two seasons UM has had more injuries to key players than usual. I know Barwis stresses that his techniques prevent injuries from happening, but it sure has not appeared that way. Is it possible that his training techniques are doing more harm than good ?

Thanks and keep up the great work

Thanks for the question.

We believe strongly that Coach Barwis is very good at what he does. He is a very passionate person who will get anybody energetic and wanting to get in better shape, including some “old players/coaches” when you talk to him. If you ever have a chance to hear Coach Barwis speak, we recommend taking advantage of the opportunity.

In our opinion though, all the top programs have very good strength and conditioning guys who are his (Barwis) equal. Without having a high level strength and conditioning component, a program could slip out of the elite category in rapid order.

We blame the lack of depth and not having superior athletes as much as anything for the injury problems.

Strength and conditioning is a long-term venture, each season should show continued growth, assuming the talent level is sufficient.
