Coach's Corner: Grading the Michigan 2010 Recruiting Class -- Part 1 of 3

This is about the fifth revision. Why so? The 2010 class is a tough group to evaluate, because after the top twelve, or so, most of the players are very close as to upside and actual to-date, on the field, performance.

Going in reverse order:

27) Terry Talbott:

Well somebody had to be last. Terry could just as easily have been placed ahead of a few others listed below. There is little difference between the bottom five or six. All are projects that show some skill and potential. Ponder this question: will Terry settle out of the in-between label, surprise many, and “overachieve?”

Grade: On Film C+ ... Ceiling C+

26) Jeremy Jackson:

It will be very interesting to see how the staff uses Jeremy in the offense. He has good size and hands, and separates okay at the high school level. The biggest question becomes; will his lack of speed allow him to separate at the next level. Eventually, Jeremy may be very good with a Kevin Koger-like role. Ponder this question: like the other freshmen receivers, will his strength and blocking get him on the field quicker than the others?

Grade: On Film C+ ... Ceiling C+

25) DJ Williamson:

D. J. is more of a track athlete than a football player at this time. He is a long strider who takes a while to hit top speed. If he improves his explosiveness and burst, D. J. has the other skills to become successful. Ponder this question: will the athlete become the football player?

Grade: On film C/C+ ... Ceiling B

24) Jordan Paskorz:

One week ago this grade would have been higher. Reports were put out that Paskorz was up to 270 pounds and he was excited about his potential at defensive tackle. If the 235-pound weight is correct, then we are not as excited. If he does end up a defensive tackle, then he grades high, as a linebacker not so much. Ponder this question: will Jordan be a tweener or find a spot and fit right in?

Grade: On film C+ ... Ceiling at DT B/B+ ... at LB’er C

23) Stephen Hopkins:

Stephen is a big, physical football player. He runs hard and is solid between the tackles. Stephen played against very high-level high school talent. He also plays a solid linebacker game. Stephen does not have much wiggle or elusiveness and runs upright more than many like. He is big and once on the practice field becomes Michigan’s biggest true running back. Ponder this question: will Stephen fit into the stable of true running backs, or is he destined for fullback or linebacker?

Grade: On Film B ... Ceiling C+

22) Drew Dileo:

Drew is a solid slot receiver prospect. He catches the ball well and is good in space. But Drew lacks top end speed and elite level explosiveness. Like many, Drew is an excellent student. Ponder this question: can Drew compete with some really strong athletes at the slot, or will special teams be the ultimate destination?

Grade: On Film B- ... Ceiling C+

21) Davion Rogers:

Davion is a long, lanky defensive prospect. He moves well for his size and will hit you. The question is does he have the frame to add enough weight to play defensive end or the overall skill to play linebacker? Davion is the classic high risk, high reward player.

Grade: On Film C+ ... Ceiling B+, but could also be a C-

20) Ray Vinopal:

Ray is a very physical and tough football player from a superior program. Ray moves well and is solid in coverage. Ray’s size and lack of explosiveness could be an issue. He well may have been the biggest recruiting surprise in this class. Ponder this question: will this be the player, from a large group of similar commits, to separate himself from the pack? Or will special teams be the final destination?

Grade: On Film B- ... Ceiling C+

19) Terrence Talbott:

Terrence has very good skills, measurables, excellent explosion, and a good burst. His size could be an issue against bigger stronger split-ends. He will hit you. Ponder this question: will this be the player, from a large group of similar commits, to separate himself from the pack?

Grade: On Film B ... Ceiling B-
