Quick Defensive Tidbits:

Defensive notes: the first group, excepting a few runs by Denard, held its own for the most part.

Defensive line: with Renaldo Sagesse not present at this practice, this group seemed to lacked quality depth on the second group. The defensive line, again like the offensive line, is hard to judge right now. Neither group is dominating the other, leaving the obvious question, is this good or is this bad? No one is really standing out and the line play is a stalemate right now. Hopefully in the scrimmage on Saturday we will get a better impression of the true nature of both groups’ performance.

Defensive backs: Floyd was held out of practice and he wore a red jersey, so that meant JT Turner stepped in with the first group and he played well. JT is now a big kid, but he still played well. Again, we all might not know how well JT can play until he faces a team that stretches the field. As has been said for the defensive backs in general – it will be hard to make a determination about coverage skills for the defensive backs until a team strikes fear in them by stretching the field. As with previous reports, the defensive backs look to be sitting on the short quick routes.

Linebackers: even without Craig Roh this group looked decent Thursday. JB Fitzgerald took snaps at Roh’s position. Obi Ezeh had probably one of his better practices, along with Mouton. In the scrimmage, Kenny Demens did not play with either the first or second group. Cam Gordon is looking good as the free safety (deep safety), but how will he do against a team that uses a lot of play action or a deep passing attack, because right now there is no real way of knowing. Thomas Gordon is looking good as well. Vlad is back from his injury, but he is still wearing a brace on the knee and is currently working out with the second group.
